CRUISE READY
The Nethermead is no dock queen. When we purchased the boat in 2020, she had recently sailed across the Atlantic and was equipped with essential cruising gear for safety and comfort, such as a water maker. Since becoming owners, we have made updates and additions to her inventory to make her perfectly suited to our family voyage through the Caribbean.
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THE BOAT
We considered a lot of boats. Here’s why we fell in love with this one.
Inviting Interior
We chose this boat knowing that it would be our family home for about a year as we sail through the Caribbean. Even though we’re usually out exploring, we still spend a fair amount of time inside the boat. We knew we wanted an interior that was bright, breezy, and that provided many of the comforts of home. The lovely interior design of the Hanse 415 captured our attention from the first time we saw photos of it. The salon and three cabins are modern and understated, and the light Italian oak furniture and numerous hatches make spending time below a totally different experience than on other boats we considered.
Safe Sailing
As we searched for a boat, we quickly narrowed it down to models that could be easily single-handed. Because we have young children, only one adult could really concentrate on sailing. That meant tacking, raising, dousing, and reefing sail all had to be easy. The Hanse 415 excels in this area. All lines are led aft to the helm station. Electric primary winches make light work of heavy tasks. And the battended jib tacks itself. The modern, fractional rig is also very forgiving, providing surprisingly fast sailing without a lot of fuss.
Three-Cabin Layout
When we started our journey, we knew we wanted private cabins for each of our two kids so that they wouldn’t wake each other up and so we could get more sleep. For a 41-foot boat, the Hanse 415 offers incredible space. The two aft cabins have nearly queen-size beds and large hanging lockers and shelves. As our kids got a little older and could start to share a cabin, we used the other cabin to occasionally host guests.
Swim Platform
We love, LOVE the fold down swim platform! Not only is it great for swimming, with its swim ladder, but it provides a safe and convenient (not to mention wide) “dock” for entering and exiting the dinghy. Unlike so-called sugar-scoop sterns, our plumb stern with fold-down platform doesn’t cut into the deck space or interior volume of the boat. That’s one reason our 41-foot boat feels every bit as big as some 45-footers.
Newness
Built in 2017, the Nethermead is newer than many other boats we looked at during our search. While the upfront cost was a bit more, we believe the cost of ownership has been lower than it might have been had we chosen an older boat. While we’ve certainly spent time on maintenance projects and a few repairs, we’ve found that we’ve had to endure less boat work and downtime waiting for parts and repairs than many of our other cruising friends. As a bonus, the boat still feels quite fresh and new, without the price tag of a brand-new vessel from the factory.
Cruise Equipped
The original owner of our boat sailed it across the Atlantic from Europe to the Caribbean and then up to Miami. It came pre-equipped with much of the equipment we wanted for comfortable cruising, such as a water maker, safety gear, excellent electronics, and satellite communications. Since taking ownership, we have added even more equipment, such as a new, larger dinghy, upgraded batteries, new solar panels, a new life raft, a backup generator, and more. Our hope is that the Nethermead’s new owner will take this turn-key vessel cruising.
